Dry skin generally produces fewer protective lipids, which can lead to tightness, roughness, and discomfort. It should not be confused with skin that is simply dehydrated: dehydration can affect all skin types and mainly corresponds to a temporary lack of water.
The goal of a dry-skin routine is therefore to cleanse without irritating, provide hydration and comfort, then limit water loss with suitable textures.
How can you recognize dry skin?
The most common signs are recurring tightness, rough areas, a feeling of discomfort after cleansing, or a lack of suppleness. If these signs appear only during certain periods, the climate, heating, cleansing habits, or other factors may also play a role.
Morning routine for dry skin
-
Cleanse gently. Choose a facial cleanser suited to your skin's comfort. Overly harsh cleansing can intensify feelings of dryness.
-
Add a serum if needed. A facial serum containing humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin can complement your routine, depending on the formula.
-
Apply a cream. A facial cream helps maintain comfort. Richer textures may be suitable if your skin feels tight easily.
-
Finish with sun protection suited to your skin whenever you are exposed to UV rays.
Evening routine
In the evening, remove makeup if necessary with a makeup remover, then cleanse gently. Next, apply your serum if needed, followed by your cream. A hydrating or nourishing face mask can be added occasionally if its formula suits your skin.
Which ingredients and textures should you prioritize?
Formulas containing humectants, emollients, or lipids may be beneficial for dry skin. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, certain plant oils and butters, and ceramides are examples of commonly used ingredients, but it is always the complete formula and your skin's tolerance that matter.
What about exfoliation?
Dry skin does not need to be exfoliated frequently. If you use a peel or exfoliating treatment, follow the product's recommendations, introduce it gradually, and reduce the frequency if discomfort occurs.
Common mistakes
- using very hot water;
- using multiple exfoliants;
- choosing a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling uncomfortable;
- changing several products at the same time, making it difficult to identify an irritation.
